Privacy Policy for ScanShield

Ngozi Emeh-Festus ("I", "me", or "my") built the ScanShield app (the "App") as a Free utility application. This application is provided by me at no cost and is intended for use as is.

This page is used to inform visitors regarding my policies regarding the local processing and protection of Personal Information for anyone who decides to use my application.

By using the App, you agree to the local processing of information as described in this policy. The limited device data accessed by the App remains strictly on your device and is used solely for providing the application's features. I do not collect, transmit, or share your personal information.

Information Processing and Use

ScanShield is designed with a privacy-first approach. I do not collect, transmit, store, or sell any personally identifiable information (PII) to external servers. All core functionality and data processing happen locally on your device.

For a better experience, and to provide the core features of my App, I require certain device permissions. Here is exactly what I request and why:

• Camera Permission: I require camera access solely to scan QR codes and barcodes in real-time. The video feed is processed locally on your device and is never recorded, saved, or transmitted to any external server.
• Storage/Photos Permission: I require storage access so you can select screenshots or images from your gallery to scan for hidden QR codes. Images are processed locally on your device and are never uploaded to my servers.
• Location Permission & Network Data: To perform a Wi-Fi Security Audit, the Android operating system requires apps to have Location permissions to read the name (SSID) and hardware address (BSSID/MAC) of the Wi-Fi network you are currently connected to. The audit also evaluates your local IP address and gateway routing. I do not track your physical location. This data is processed strictly locally on your device to detect rogue access points and routing vulnerabilities. It is never transmitted to my servers.

Third-Party Services

While I do not collect personal data, the App relies on third-party intelligence databases and endpoints to verify the safety of scanned links and networks.

• Threat Intelligence Providers: When you scan a QR code containing a URL, that URL is securely sent to trusted third-party threat intelligence providers to check against known malware, phishing, and social engineering threats. No personal identifiers are attached to this check. All URL safety verifications are conducted anonymously to protect your privacy.
• Network Reachability Checks: During a Wi-Fi Audit, the App may ping standard public endpoints to measure latency and detect malicious traffic interception (Captive Portals). No personal user data is attached to these connectivity pings.

Data Security

I value your trust in using my App. Since ScanShield does not require user accounts, logins, or cloud storage, your scan history and preferences are saved locally using your device's secure storage. If you delete the app, your history is permanently deleted along with it.

Children’s Privacy

Because ScanShield does not collect, transmit, or store any personal data from any of its users, I inherently do not collect personally identifiable information from children under 13. The app does not require account creation or age verification and can be safely used by individuals of any age, as all processing remains entirely local to the device.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

I may update my Privacy Policy from time to time. Thus, you are advised to review this page periodically for any changes. I will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page. These changes are effective immediately after they are posted on this page.
